The Friedman collection, consisting of approximately 600 pages in Yiddish, was written by Rabbi Israel Shalom Yosef Friedman (1914- 2009) the eldest son of the Boyaner Rabbe, R. Mordechai Shlomo Friedman. During the years 1950-1951 (approximately), Rabbi Israel Friedman recorded various Hasidic teachings, stories, and wonder-tales about the conduct of the Tsadikim, their leadership of the Hasidic courts in Europe before the Holocaust, and their unique cultural role as spiritual, religious, and political leaders as told to him by various informants. This collection includes historical information, anecdotes, and vignettes about the Baal Shem Tov and the early Hasidic movement as well as lesser-known Hasidic rebbes and dynasties. As a scion of the Ruzhin dynasty, this collection is particularly rich in stories about the Ruzhin court and its offshoots.
