When the [author of the] Hayei Adam [R. Abraham Danzig (d. 1820)] ruled that potatoes were beans [pertaining to the laws of Passover] the Apter Rav observed: “Potatoes are man’s sustenance (hayei adam) but the [author of the] Hayei adam is beans.”

Late Hasidism was perceived and presented in research as a movement of institutionalization and entrenchment that lost the initial Hasidic renaissance, and even degenerated. Recently there have been changes in research and more complex methods and approaches have been introduced that find characteristics unique to late Hasidim.
