אל הרבי מצאנז הגיעה תשובה הלכתית בנוגע לאישה עגונה אחת. אחת מהחתימות על התשובה הייתה של הרב מסטריע, ר’ בענצי’ל. בתשובה דנו האם ‘שוטה לדבר אחד’ נקרא שוטה לכל דבר אחר. השאלה הייתה האם שוטה לדבר אחד יכול להתגרש מאישה. ר’ בנצי’ל פסק שכן – כלומר, ש’שוטה לדבר אחד’ הוא לא ‘שוטה’ לכל התורה כולה, והוא הביא ראיה לכך שחסידים הם בוודאי ‘שוטה לדבר אחד’ – ואין ספק שהם רשאים להתגרש מנשותיהם.

A Rabbinical inquiry regarding an agunah (“chained” woman) came before the Sanzer Rebbe. One of the signatories was the Strier Rabbi, R. Benzil.
In the inquiry, the matter of whether “an idiot in one matter” is considered an idiot in all else came up. The question was whether “an idiot in one matter” could divorce a woman. R. Benzil concluded that he could – that “an idiot in one matter” is not considered an idiot regarding the entire Torah. He brought support [for his position] from the fact that Hasidim are certainly “idiots in one matter” – and there is no question that they may divorce their wives.

Late Hasidism was perceived and presented in research as a movement of institutionalization and entrenchment that lost the initial Hasidic renaissance, and even degenerated. Recently there have been changes in research and more complex methods and approaches have been introduced that find characteristics unique to late Hasidim.
